Toledo is a city well known for its industry, especially in glass and auto parts production, and for its art community, education, and local sports teams. Though the city was originally name for Toledo, Spain, it once carried the sobriquet �The Glass City�, due to its mass production of glass for bottles, buildings, and cars. Today, Toledo hopes to become Ohio's "solar valley." Solar Fields is on the forefront of the fast growing "green industry," supplying panels that help power a National Guard base. It is one of dozens of new companies in Toledo that now make rivers of glass into solar cells, panels and coatings. The University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University received Ohio grants for solar energy research, and companies like Xunlight opened plants in Toledo and the surrounding area.

Toledo is home to several other large companies. Faurecia Exhaust Systems, which is a $2 billion subsidiary to France's Faurecia SA, and Pilkington North America, which is a $900 million subsidiary to Britain's Pilkington Ltd., are located in here. It is also the primary market city for northwest Ohio, a region of nine counties with a population in excess of one million. As such there is a high concentration of retail establishments and medical facilities in Toledo.

HCR Manor Care is an up and coming Fortune 1000 company headquartered in Toledo. The largest employer in Toledo is the University of Toledo, while the healthcare industry is now the city's largest employment sector. The city is also home to two Fortune 500 companies, Dana Corporation, and Owens Corning. Another Fortune 500 company, Owens-Illinois, has recently relocated to suburban Perrysburg. One SeaGate is currently the location of Fifth-Third Bank's Northwest Ohio headquarters.
